[Azmuth's handwriting is improving through necessity but it's obvious that he's not used to recording things by hand. The letters are a bit sloppy in places but at least it's legible.]

Recently a few appliances and other devices have appeared using crystal power sources. I'm aiming to study these crystals to see if it might be possible to adapt them for other uses, but I need to start by studying the devices they currently power to see how their energy is being harnessed. Then I can build some means of testing power output and so on. Given there's no spectrographs or other specialized equipment here, I'll be getting creative.

If anyone would be to willing to allow me to study the devices in your home, I'd be most appreciative. I promise not to attempt any modifications. I may have centuries of experience with technology but I'm not so foolish to start making changes without fully understanding what I'm looking at first. However, if you're willing to donate one of these devices to allow me to completely deconstruct it for further study, I'd be most appreciative.

I understand that likely something will be expected of me in return. I am willing to trade what I can.

I located this object in a particularly run-down part of the city the other day. I believe it might be some sort of carafe or jug? It has a crystal on the bottom, but I cannot guess to its function.

It'd be an excellent device to experiment on if you don't mind.

[ Her little nerd heart could just explode with joy. ]

It's always good to have an alternative perspective on things. You might notice something I didn't and visa versa. I assume you were planning to do your own studies, so it'd make more sense to combine our efforts.

[ For Zelda, Songerein still feels too good to be true. A place full of people as passionate about science and technology as the princess and don't look down on her for her failures? She's still kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop. ]

Yes, I have intended to study it, but I haven't yet determined the best way to approach it.

[What is it about non-Galvan species looking down on scientists?!]

I find the best way to do so is to start with a general overview and then work on the minutiae. Basically taking in the forest as a whole and then focusing on the individual trees. Looking at the overarching whole first helps one understand how each individual piece fits.

[ Most people just don't understand (or fear) science. It really is a tragedy. ]

That is a wonderful idea, thank you. I thought that trying the opposite might help me understand what this object is, but I see how that approach was flawed.

Would you like me to bring it to you? My imprint does not give it scale. I believe it is roughly twice your height.

There are times when you do have to work from the opposite perspective such as if you have an incomplete, nonfunctional device and you need to determine what it's supposed to do. Being able to work from both directions is a useful skill to have.

That would be helpful or I can meet you somewhere. Preferably indoors if you don't mind. I'm not used to temperatures this cool for extended periods of time.

I will endeavor to remember that for the future.

Would you like to come to my treehouse? One of my neighbors was kind enough to create a small hearth that somehow does not set my entire home ablaze.

[ It sounds like Azmuth doesn't have enough winter clothes. Perhaps Zelda could sew something warm for him later. ]

[Azmuth closes the journal and starts heading towards Zelda's treehouse. He wraps his arms around himself, shivering in the late autumn air. Galvan Prime never gets this cold!]

[When he arrives at her door, he knocks as loudly as he can. He knows his small size makes certain noises much quieter.]

[ There's something inherently... familiar about this. Something about the way this is presented, the familiarity with technology, that reminds Samus of the Chozo. Of course, she knows this isn't a Chozo. The name doesn't sound Chozo, and she can clearly see his picture on the back of the journal. But all the same: ]

Where should I meet you?

The plaza would likely be easiest given it's an easily-recognizable landmark. I'll stand on one of the outdoor cafe tables once I reach it, but it will take me some time to get there.

[Probably didn't need to point out he wasn't going to be on the ground but after Zelda's moment of panic, he'd rather avoid it again.]

[ ... Well, standing on a table would certainly help him stick out. Although Samus had to wonder why he felt the need to stand on a table, when she could clearly see his picture on the back of the journal. Whatever the case, she made her way to the plaza, still clad in her power suit. Getting a few looks as she approached the cafe-- after all, she was six foot plus and clad in advanced armor-- before she sat down by one of the tables.

Awkwardly. Because again, armor. ]

[Azmuth wasn't a fan of the cooling temperatures, but he made his way as quickly as possible to the plaza. The problem wasn't that he wouldn't be recognizable -- he was definitely unique among all the human-seeing population -- it was just...well...]

[That picture? It was to scale. As in 1:1 scale. His unimpressive five inches of height were nothing to really write home about.]

[ That is. Staggeringly small. And Samus can't help but be silent for a hot minute when her gaze finally lands on the tiny alien that had managed to climb onto the cafe table. Not... necessarily the strangest thing she's ever seen, really. But she couldn't deny she hadn't been prepared for it. ]

... I take it you're Azmuth. [ To her credit, her voice was composed. It was also very clearly female, even through the distortion of her helmet's speakers. ]

Correct. And you're obviously "Samus".

[He tilted his head as he took in the armor.]

Simply combat or necessary biosuit?

I am.

[ She was regaining what little composure she even lost, the longer she looked at him. Just seeing him with her own two eyes did plenty to help her adjust to the fact that he was, in fact, that small. He wasn't the first species she'd seen that was smaller than average-- she was very well traveled, after all. But he was definitely the smallest, by a far margin.

It didn't matter, ultimately. She'd adjust. She always did. ]

Simply combat. [ Then, after a second: ] Don't take it personally.

[Azmuth takes her obvious shock in stride. It's not the first reaction he's gotten to someone realizing just how small Galvans were. Honestly, the fact that his kind became the dominant species of his planet was through a series of flukes. Without the outside interference, Galvankind likely would've never become what they are today.]

I don't see why I would. Some species consider that to be casual wear.

Now then, what sort of experience do you have with engineering?

[Straight and to the point.]

Very little. My experience is in its use, not in its construction. My familiarity is mostly with Chozo technology, which in my... dimension? [ The term 'world' felt lacking to her. ] is the most advanced technology in our galaxy. Most missions I take involve the discovery and use of said technology.

Likewise, the suit I'm currently wearing is Chozo technology. Most technology I find is adaptable with my suit. Obviously that's not as applicable in this plane of existence, but I'm still figuring out the limits of dreamotion.

[ A pause, as she realized that was a lot to digest, probably. ]

... I'm willing to learn if I need to.

I'm not familiar with a "Chozo" race. Interesting. If you'd be willing, I'd like to study your armor. It's intriguing.

[And he nods his head.]

I'm willing to teach you whatever is necessary. If you're willing to learn, I see no reason to deny you the opportunity.

That is really amazing. I have never encountered an appliance that runs on crystals before. I actually found this inside my treehouse earlier this morning.

(She then imprints an image of an unusual fan that has lightbulbs instead of fan blades.)

Very curious! I'm assuming it provides light in addition to cooling the air?

Yes, I’m pretty certain that it can, considering that the lightbulbs can do double duty as a light source and a way to keep the air cool.

Pooka, my dog, got a little surprised by its presence when he first saw it.

Probably more useful for moving warm air that cool unless the fan is moving fast enough. Honestly I've never seen such a device before.

Neither do I. I don’t think that I have seen something like this in either my world or in the Realm of Stories before. Maybe I should turn it on now to see how it works.

I'd recommend caution. And to ensure your little companion doesn't shove his nose into it.

Fair point, I’m going to keep an eye on my dog before he tries to sniff at it while I try to carefully get the device working properly.

Please let me know what the result is. It's a rather unique --possibly useless -- design.
