001 - Dream Recording
Sender: Kazuma Asogi
To: Everyone
Subject: Dream recording
CW: Blood, Dead Bodies, Drowning
The dream starts in darkness, cold and quiet. The muffled sound of something like the swing of a sword cuts through the silence, and someone screaming. Laughter, unsettling gleeful laughter.
It gets warm, a fire in color, appearing and spreading. The screams of people get louder. There are flashes of grayed out people laying on the ground, faces obscured like a staticky television. The laughter still echoes, getting louder. Then a voice speaks up. It sounded like Kazuma, and yet not. There was an edge to it, deeper and wild.
You can't run. You can't hide.
A flash, a clawed hand rising up to strike at something, or someone. The people laying on the ground now visibly show claw wounds. The blood is in color, red.
My time may be up, but I've always been a part of you. Never forget that.
The laying people flash before him again, but now they're in color, their faces no longer obscured as they flash by with the same shocked expressions.
The dream will abruptly end soon after, left with a feeling that someone just broke the surface of water.
[Unbeknownst to Kazuma, he isn't aware about his nightmare having been recorded, currently more rattled by it as he wakes from sleep in a cold sweat.]

sorry for the delay here, rough work/life balance for a bit there ;;
by the time kazuma joins him, he's sizing up one of the stovetops, pinching his chin between a thumb and forefinger. )
I have a little bit of experience with small appliances.
( uh, game consoles and laptops totally count, right? )
It'd be a bonus if we could get some of these up and running.
No worries!
[He presses a hand on a dusty looking oven. Considering what sort of world this was, it's something related to dreams, but he wonders how one channels it directly to power something else...?] I doubt all of these are run by your typical power source.
♥
( and a café, but— that's neither here nor there. it isn't like he repaired anything in the beef bowl shop either... unless you counted a staffing crisis. )
I think you're right about that though— there isn't much about this place that's typical.
( not even just this quaint little fooderie. the whole world itself was, well...
still, ren wasn't just about to sit around and be idle, he'd come to help! so help he will try, dragging one of the stoves away from the wall to check what might be revealed behind it, in terms of wiring... )
Was... that other world anything like this one?
no subject
[Though that was mostly his "other self" that ran the place. The appliance suspiciously do not appear to have any sort of wires attached to them. There is something that appears to be a crystal attached to it though.]
...Well, it certainly had the magical aspect, but I feel the rules of that world was more clear cut than this one. It was a realm tied to stories and fairytales.
no subject
( that seemed to pique ren's interest.
what sort of food might kazuma have experience with? he wondered.
but from his companion, he looked back down again, raising a brow at the crystal apparatus. nope, definitely haven't seen anything like this before. still, he runs his fingers along the gem, looking for any chips or scratches... )
Wait, fairy tales like— The Three Little Hogs?
no subject
[It's hard to tell, but running a hand over the crystal will reveal it's been chipped. Probably an indication it's use has been worn. As Kazuma walks passed him to check some of the other appliances, they too will have crystals attached to them. Most are cracked, but there are a few that seems to still be in intact, just not functioning.]
Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, you know a story, it probably exists there. They are reality in that world, and our purpose for being there was to help restore them.
no subject
( oh! his brow raises as his hands run over the worn parts of the crystal. hmm. well, thinking it's broken, he'll just go ahead and take it out of the stove. or at least... try to. he's been training his proficiency for moments like this!!
he's listening as he works, the side of his cheek digging in with a thoughtful: ) Hm.
I'm definitely familiar with some of those back home, too. Did you have to slay the dragon? Rescue a princess or two?
( in terms of what "restore" might mean... )
no subject
[Press him further, and maybe he'll explain. No matter how much wiggling it does, the crystal refuses to come free from the stove appliance. It might need some grease to get it loose.]
Yes, to all of that. We play out the scenes to complete the story. Although...not all them end as you expect them to. The Storyteller didn't seem to mind though, as long as it was completed.
no subject
I think I know just the type.
( more than likely though, ren is completely misreading the situation and just doesn't realize it. but who doesn't have a complicated relationship here and there, right??
wow this crystal thing sure is stubborn though!! hmm. well if it's a restaurant maybe there's some oil of some kind kicking around. turning away from his task, ren is just going to... look through some cupboards in the meantime, hoping to get lucky. )
So you were all able to help this Storyteller restore their world then? Did it work out all right?
no subject
[Ren will definitely find something in those cupboards, bugs. A few glowing moth-like creatures fly out when Ren opens them, along with some iridescent roach critters. As the moths fly pass some of the crystals attached to the appliances, they let off a dim glow, soon going dark once they fly away.
Kazuma noticing that, tries locate a jar they could trap one of the insects.]
The message left by the Storyteller indicates we did, but the threat has not been dealt with. It escaped into this world apparently.
no subject
( wishful thinking, right?
extremely wishful, considering the cupboard he just opened as revealed a alarming amount of bugs all at once?? as some of the moths fly right in his face, he's sort of batting them away not really sure if he should be catching them or shooing them at first with an: ) Ah...!
( eventually though he seems to catch on enough to try and clamp down gently on the ones that latched onto his shirt. once kazuma has that jar ready, ren's got a few tenants on hand! )
Wait, into this one?
( now that was interesting. )
Have you... talked to this Storyteller or something?
no subject
They sent a final message to those who made it into this world. It was mention in the message that the Story Eater likely came here. [He comes over, jar in hand to take those moths off his hands.]
I'm assuming these insects are imbued with the dreams powering this world.
no subject
So maybe it's developed a taste for dreams now instead...
( seems plausible? maybe? or maybe he's just grasping at straws to try and make sense of the things that go on in this place.
just like he's grasping at moths, and trying to place them inside of the jar. oop, have a beetle(?) too, while he's at it.
once he's stacked several inside, ren bends down slightly to give them a closer look, from behind the glass, adjusting his spectacles. )
What if we try putting them next to one of these crystal things?
no subject
[So for now...they have some time until some it gives some indication of it's presence.
Colorful insects now in the jar, he checks the appliances, looking for a crystal that isn't cracked. He'll put the jar next to the crystal attached to the oven and it starts to glow faintly.]
...Well, it's a reaction, but it's probably too weak to fully power it.
no subject
( tidbits of information to tuck away for later, perhaps.
if even the tapirs weren't aware, maybe there were other ways he could make an attempt to parse the situation amongst the local species. if they'd noticed anything out of the ordinary, maybe...
meanwhile, as the jar draws in close to the oven's crystal... ren's eyes do widen in surprise, even though he had been hoping for this reaction. )
Imbued with dreams... ( he repeats kazuma's earlier assumption. ) I wonder if the reaction is small because the subjects are small, too.
no subject
But, at least this tells us these things are still functional. The ones with cracked crystals though, I'm not sure if we can replace those.
no subject
( ren seems to be in agreement about that.
how nice would be though, to have a functioning kitchen...? )
I wonder if there some kind of mine around here. Or maybe in the mountains.
no subject
[He grabs hold of one of the crystals, making an attempt to pull it out and failing.] There has to be a crystal in here we can take. That way we can get someone to properly examine it.
no subject
( no ren... that is probably not at all what he meant. )
Maybe if I hang into this thing, you'll be able to get a better grip on it.
( he's already getting into position to get a good hold on the appliance of kazuma's choosing, readying to dig his heels in.
this is a bad idea. )
no subject
And fortunately (or unfortunately), Kazuma comes up with bad ideas all the time, thinking they're very good ones. He'll go ahead and see if there's a crystal that looks kind of loose. He could care less if it's cracked or not at this point.]
This one. [He'll go ahead and take hold of a crystal attached what appeared to be a portable grill of sorts. It's like pulling a loose tooth, pain.] Come on...! [One hand, two hands. Another moment later, there's a loud clatter as Kazuma pulls so hard he falls backwards, disturbing the dust and creating a dust cloud in the kitchen.]
no subject
It seemed better than tape.
( which, is true, right? ... he shrugs. it wasn't any deeper than that, apparently.
once their prey has been picked, ren gets into position on the other side of the grill, pulling in the opposite direction. he's straining as he does it, clearly putting his back into it, until— ! )
Wah...!
( he stumbled forward a few steps once the counter-weight that was kazuma asogi had flown off into the dust of yesteryear. )
Uh... ( he coughs, fanning some of the cloud away as it sailed through the air. ) Are you okay, Kazuma?
no subject
I'm all right. I think I got it. [He did indeed get something, the crystal cracked into small pieces after being pulled out.]
no subject
ren approaches just enough to be able to see that they've at least... dislodged parts of it? hey, it's a win and he'll take it as one. )
It's something, at least.
( lookin' on the bright side, over here... )
Maybe someone might have a better idea of what to do with it. I can think of one person in particular that might be interested, actually... A cross between magic and tech, yeah, I think it might be right up her alley.
no subject
"Right up her alley".
Now that he thinks about it...didn't she mention knowing a Ren?] Is it Futaba Sakura?
no subject
( there's clearly some surprise evident on ren's part.
futaba wasn't exactly the "get out and meet people"-type, though she had certainly made great strides since last summer. )
